For everything that lives, ageing is an inescapable part of life. We dread it, run from it, but ageing still arrives. Ageing comes with a ton of learning experiences but also with its own challenges. We spoke to three elderly people about the things they found hardest about their bodies getting older. Here’s what they had to say:
Ambrose, 71
For me, getting older means discovering that you can’t do the things you used to do easily. For example, running two miles used to be a breeze but now, you notice you can’t run half a mile. When I walk for long distances, I become too tired. I used to be able to take long walks but I can’t do that anymore because my waist and legs start to hurt.
When you’re ageing, the best thing to do is to accept the fact that you won’t be young forever. You have to accept that you’re ageing. If you don’t, you will be filled with a lot of regret.
Razaq, 69
Being old is a blessing, although the toughest parts are two-fold.
The first part is not being able to work like before because your body does not permit it. Before you know it, you are paying bills at the hospital. The second part is looking back at some decisions one should have made earlier in life instead of prioritizing the feelings of others.
Paul, 80
My leg is swelling, and my son just sent me medicine from abroad. But there are things I want to tell you that I worry that I won’t be able to because the medicine is making me forget everything.
