If you’ve ever been in the trenches financially as a Nigerian student this post will hit too close to home. These are seven low budget foods that have saved Nigerian students over the years.
Thank us later.
1. Bread and butter
No, you don’t have the butter in your house. You buy ₦120 bread and tell the person selling it to spread ₦30 butter inside it while complaining all the while that they’re scamming you by not putting enough butter. ₦150 and two sachets of pure water and your dinner is set. Tomorrow is another day.
2. Bread and ewa aganyin
See, this one is for when you only have enough money to eat one meal in a day. This meal, when used for this purpose is neither breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s brunch, right in the middle of the day, so it can quench your breakfast hunger and fill you for the rest of the day. ₦100 bread, ₦100 ewa aganyin and two sachets of pure water. Your fuel tank will gauge.
3. Concoction
Have you stayed in a university hostel if you don’t know what concoction is? Put some rice or spaghetti into a pot and then throw everything else you have into it— palm oil, fish, crayfish, pepper, salt. Whatever comes out, eat it like that. You will not die.
4. Garri
AKA, “Old Reliable”. Garri is probably the only food you can get for free. If you’ve ever been a broke student, this picture is probably giving you violent flashbacks.
5. Noodles
If your brokeness is not so, so broke, and you can afford noodles, good for you. This is another go-to for broke students.
6. Bread and akara
This one won’t just fill you up, you’ll have a good time while eating it.
7. Water
When all else fails, just drink water. We’ve all been there.
