In November 2020, we published this Naira Life about an oil and gas engine that shook the internet. As the conversation it sparked raged online, the Zikoko team also discussed it during our Monday editorial meeting. While the team half-jokingly, half-seriously, debated if we’d made the right career choices, one of my co-workers at the time, Hassan, said: “There’s a time to be broke and a time to be rich.”
It was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but I held on to it and often revisit the meaning behind those words. Writing this week’s Naira Life was another reminder that this sentiment holds some truth.
You see the guy in this story? He made his bets at the right time and embraced everything that came with it, even though it didn’t translate into immediate wealth. But boy, did it set him on the proper path.
