Nigeria is blessed with some of the most beautiful historic sites in the world. But as always, we have managed to screw them up.
Peep some of them, and please don’t cry:
1. National Arts Theatre
The National Arts Theatre is a 5,000 seater monument that was completed by the Olusegun Obasanjo Military Administration in 1976. It is shaped like military hat, has a stage that can collapse into itself, has 2 cinemas, has technical capacity for the simultaneous translation of 8 languages, among other exotic things.
But as today, the National Arts Theatre is a shadow of itself. It loses over N300 billion yearly, and basic things like electricity are not even functional.
2. Obudu Cattle Ranch
The Obudu Mountain Resort, or “Obudu Cattle Ranch” used to be one of the most beautiful tourist centers in Nigeria. Developed in 1951 by M. McCaughley, a British adventurer, the tourist center has become a shadow of itself.
3. The Ancient Kano City Walls
The Kano city walls were ancient walls to protect the people of Kano. Completed in the 14th century, the Kano City walls were described as the most beautiful monument in West Africa.
However, as at today, the walls have all but disappeared.
4. Benin Moats
The Benin moats, which, including ramparts, made up the Great walls of Benin, was once considered the world’s largest earthwork.
Meanwhile, as at today:
Given that it is practically impossible to have this walls back, can we at least properly recognise it in our history? People don’t even know it ever existed.
5. Sukur Kingdom
The Sukur cultural landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on a hill above the village of Sukur on the highest plains on Mandara Mountains in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State in North-Eastern Nigeria. It is situated in the Mandara Mountain, close to the border with Cameroon.
However, the last we heard about Sukur Kingdom is its fight to preserve its World Heritage status after incessant Boko Haram attacks.
