Good morning, {$name}. 🌞
I want to report the Afro Nation people to you. I was very excited when I learned they were bringing the festival to Nigeria. A few friends went to Afro Nation Ghana last year, and they had the time of their lives.
It was supposed to be my turn to see what the hype was about this year. But I’m not sure anymore after seeing the ticket prices last week. The cheapest ticket (yet) costs ₦228k. This same amount will get you about 380 litres of fuel. Omo, there is internet and YouTube at home.
How much do you think is a fair price for these tickets, though? Please humour me and let me know in the #HowMuchLast section.
Moving on, this week’s Naira Life explores one of my favourite topics — how government policies affect the average person. For this story, the category is petrol subsidy removal/fuel hike.

The #NairaLife of a Cab Driver Struggling With the Fuel Hike
This 33-year-old started his career in transportation as a wheel barrow pusher in 2001. Since then, he’s gone from okada rider to personal driver and more. In 2019, he joined the e-hailing market, making up to ₦60k/week until the recent fuel subsidy removal that’s put him in debt.
How has this affected his quality of life?

Dating on a ₦40k Monthly Teacher Salary in Port Harcourt
After losing a marketing job in Lagos, 30-year-old Chidi moved to Port Harcourt. Five years later, he’s managing a ₦40k teaching job, zero savings, ₦300k debt and a supportive girlfriend who believes his hard work will pay off some day.
An excerpt: “My babe and I are trying to work on our finances. Her uncle wants to get her a state job that comes with accommodation and a salary of over ₦100k. When she gets it, we can start saving together, maybe in a joint account.”
